Steep Slope Roof Replacement Project in Minneapolis

Steep Slope Roof Replacement Project in Minneapolis
🏠 Project Overview
This Minneapolis home had a steep, cut-up roof with lots of ridges, valleys, and roof-to-wall lines—exactly the kind of layout that demands careful prep and a full roofing system, not just new shingles.
Our crew protected the home and landscaping, tore off the existing roof down to the deck, and re-nailed any loose wood before installing a complete GAF Timberline HDZ system with full redecking, new metal in all critical areas, and upgraded ventilation designed for Minnesota weather.
The result is a clean, detailed roof that handles water properly across every valley and transition, and is backed by a GAF Golden Pledge Warranty.
🏗️ Roofing System Details
After tarping and protecting the property, we removed all existing shingles down to the wood deck. Because of gapping and deck condition, this project included a full redeck to meet code and create a solid, uniform base for the new roofing system.
Weather Protection & Underlayment
- Installed 6′ of GAF WeatherWatch® Ice & Water Shield at all gutter lines, three feet up valleys, around penetrations, and along roof-to-wall lines to help guard against ice dams and wind-driven rain.
- Installed GAF Deck-Armor® synthetic underlayment across the remaining roof deck for a breathable, stable, and dry substrate.
- Used GAF ProStart® starter shingles along all eaves and rake edges to help lock the field shingles in place and improve wind resistance.
GAF Timberline HDZ Shingle System
- Installed GAF Timberline® HDZ™ Lifetime dimensional shingles in Cedar Falls per manufacturer specifications using 1 ¼” roofing nails.
- Finished all hips and ridges with matching GAF Timbertex® hip & ridge shingles (Cedar Falls) to complement the roof color and provide added definition and durability across the many ridgelines.
🧱 Metalwork, Valleys & Roof-to-Wall Details
On a steep roof with lots of breaks, ridges, and dormers, proper metalwork is critical:
- Installed galvanized W-valley metal in all valleys to help channel water efficiently off the roof.
- Installed new aluminum drip edge along roof edges without gutters.
- Installed new aluminum gutter apron where gutters are present to direct water into the gutters and help prevent soffit staining.
- Installed new prebent step flashing, roof-to-wall flashing, and reglet flashing at dormers and wall intersections to tie the roofing system cleanly into the siding and masonry.
- Removed existing gutters as part of the roofing scope so the new system could be installed correctly along all edges.
This combination of flashing and metal protection is especially important on a steep-slope Minneapolis roof with many valleys and transitions.
🌬️ Ventilation & Roof Penetrations
To improve airflow and reduce the risk of attic moisture issues in such a complex roof layout, we upgraded both intake and exhaust:
- Installed new 750-style slant back exhaust vents, and cut in two additional exhaust vents to better match the roof’s square footage.
- Plugged four old vents that were no longer needed as part of the updated ventilation plan.
- Installed Lomanco Deck-Air intake vents to improve intake at the lower roof areas and help balance the system.
- Installed new high-pitch FJ Moore pipe flashings sized for the roof’s steep slope, protecting metal and PVC penetrations.
Additional details:
- Installed new lead stacks to exhaust pipes.
- Installed new chimney flashing to help keep the chimney intersection watertight.
- Detached and reset the satellite dish so it could be properly reinstalled on the new roof without compromising the system.
🔨 Redecking & Steep-Slope Installation
Because of spacing and deck condition, the home received a full OSB redeck, bringing the roof up to current code and creating a solid, smooth surface for the underlayment and shingles.
This project also carried a steep-slope fee (11/12+ pitch), reflecting the additional staging, safety, and labor required to safely install a roofing system on such a steep roof. All work was performed by certified, insured craftsmen, supervised by a Production Manager and Crew Chief.
Debris was loaded into a dumpster and hauled off-site, with a final cleanup around the property at the end of the job.
🛡️ Warranty & Result
This Minneapolis roof is protected by a GAF Golden Pledge® Warranty, providing 25-year workmanship coverage and 50-year material coverage on the installed GAF components (per the job agreement). That gives the homeowner manufacturer-backed protection and peace of mind on a complex steep-slope roof.
With a full redeck, GAF Timberline HDZ Cedar Falls system, upgraded intake and exhaust ventilation, and all-new flashing at valleys, dormers, and walls, this home is set up for long-term performance in Minnesota’s snow, ice, and heavy rains.
