Hail Damage Roof and Siding Replacement Project in Minneapolis

Hail Damage Roof and Siding Replacement Project in Minneapolis
🏠 Project Overview
After a hailstorm in Minneapolis, this homeowner was concerned about damage to both the roof and siding. Our team performed a full inspection, documented the storm damage, and worked with the insurance carrier on a complete restoration plan.
The project included a GAF Timberline HDZ roof replacement with upgraded underlayment, flashing, and ventilation, along with a full exterior siding and trim replacement. The goal was to restore the home structurally and visually while improving long-term protection against future storms.
🏗️ Roofing System Details
To start, we protected the home and landscaping before tearing off the existing shingles down to the deck. Any loose wood was re-nailed so the new system could be installed over a solid base.
Weather Protection & Underlayment
- Installed ice and water shield (IKO Protecto) along the eaves and three feet up the valleys to help protect against ice dams and wind-driven rain.
- Installed GAF FeltBuster® synthetic underlayment across the remaining roof deck to keep the roof dry and stable.
- Used GAF ProStart® starter shingles along all gutter lines and rake edges to lock in the first shingle course and improve wind resistance.
GAF Timberline HDZ Shingle System
- Installed GAF Timberline® HDZ™ Lifetime dimensional shingles per manufacturer specifications using 1 ¼” roofing nails.
- Finished all hips and ridges with GAF Timbertex® hip & ridge shingles for a clean, dimensional look and added durability.
Flashing, Edges & Roof-to-Wall Details
Hail can be especially hard on metal components, so this storm restoration included full flashing upgrades:
- Installed new W-valley metal in valleys to properly channel water off the roof.
- Installed new roof-to-wall flashing, step flashing, and reglet flashing to protect all intersections where the roof meets walls, dormers, or chimneys.
- Installed new drip edge along roof edges and new perimeter/gutter flashing to help direct water into the gutters and protect fascia and soffit.
Ventilation & Penetrations
- Installed new galvanized slant back vents sized for the home to improve attic ventilation.
- Installed new pipe flashings for metal and PVC penetrations, along with updated chimney flashing to help prevent leaks at typical hail impact points.
- All penetrations and terminations were sealed with high-quality sealant and detailed for long-term performance.
Steep pitch, two-story access, and difficult access were all accounted for in the installation approach and safety planning.
🧱 Siding & Exterior Restoration
The hailstorm also damaged the home’s siding and exterior trim. As part of the insurance-backed restoration, our crew:
- Removed hail-damaged siding, soffit, fascia, and window wraps as specified in the claim.
- Installed new siding system and trim to match the homeowner’s selections and restore the home’s appearance and protection.
- Replaced or repaired window wraps, screens, and soffit components that were impacted by hail or required removal for access.
- Completed storm window work as part of the change order to bring those openings back to proper condition.
All debris was collected, loaded into a dumpster, and hauled away at the end of the project, leaving the property clean and ready for everyday use again.
🌧️ Hail Damage & Insurance Coordination
Because this was a large hail damage claim, eRoof worked directly from the insurance scope, documented additional code items where necessary, and handled supplements for items like:
- Ice and water shield and underlayment upgrades
- Decking repairs or layover if needed to meet code
- Permit costs and additional woodwork
This helped ensure the homeowner received a complete restoration rather than a basic patch job.
🛡️ Warranty & Result
The new roof is protected by a GAF Silver Pledge® Warranty, which provides 10-year workmanship coverage and 50-year material coverage on the installed GAF roofing components (per the job agreement). Combined with the new siding and exterior trim, the home is now better prepared for future storms and looks refreshed from the curb.
With a modern GAF Timberline HDZ roof system, upgraded ventilation and flashing, and a full siding replacement, this Minneapolis home went from hail-damaged to fully restored.
