Experience Timberline Solar™: Style, Functionality, Clean Energy Integration
Timberline Solar™ offers protection and installation just like a standard roof but with added benefits. With its sleek, uniform lines and absence of bulky solar panels, it seamlessly integrates into your home’s aesthetic while generating clean electricity. It’s a roofing solution that combines style and functionality effortlessly.
Are there federal or state tax credits or incentives to go solar?
The federal residential clean energy credit can help maximize your solar savings by allowing you to claim a portion of your total solar installation costs on your federal taxes. It’s not a tax refund. Instead, it reduces the amount of money you owe in taxes as a credit.
In general, you will be able to claim the tax credit on your federal tax return for the year you install a solar system. To apply, download and fill out IRS Form 5695 for residential energy credits.
Homeowners are encouraged to explore tax credits and incentives offered by the states or localities in which their homes are located. Eligibility, requirements, and benefits associated with state or local tax credits and incentives are often different from those of the federal solar tax credits.
As always, we encourage Timberline Solar™ customers to consult their tax advisors on all available solar tax incentives.
How do I track production with my Timberline Solar™ roof?
GAF Energy has an online portal that allows customers to track their solar roof’s production. If you are a customer with an active system, please log in to our customer portal.
Can I get a battery from GAF Energy?
GAF Energy currently offers energy storage solutions in select markets. We are actively testing new batteries from various manufacturers and looking to expand this offering to other regions soon.
Timberline Solar™ is compatible with all the major battery offerings currently on the market. AC-coupled batteries like the Tesla Powerwall or Sonnen Eco are designed to be added to existing solar installations at any time. Other energy storage systems may require unique equipment for existing solar installations.
What makes a roof a solar roof?
A “solar roof” is a fully integrated roofing solution where photovoltaic (PV) cells are directly integrated into water-shedding roofing materials. In other words, the roof is the solar, and the solar is the roof. Rather than installing traditional solar panels on top of an existing roof, a solar roof serves the purpose of a roof (protection from wind, rain, etc.) while also converting the energy from the sun into electricity. Solar roofs are sometimes referred to as a BIPV (building-integrated photovoltaic) roof. Timberline Solar™ was the first product to be certified as a solar roof under UL7103.
What does it mean to be UL7103 certified?
UL7103 is the national safety standard for Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). BIPV is a solar power technology that incorporates solar-generating materials into building components, such as roofs. The UL Certification indicates a product or service meets local and federal environmental and safety regulations. This signals to consumers that the manufacturer follows standards for quality and safety. Timberline Solar™ was the first product in the world to be certified to this standard.
Is there a cost difference between solar shingles and panels?
The cost of Timberline Solar™ is comparable to the cost of buying a new roof plus installing traditional solar panels. As a whole-roof solution, Timberline Solar™ reduces unforeseen costs by streamlining installation from two projects to one, maximizing layout potential with a smaller form factor that can fit around roof obstacles, requiring lower maintenance, and protecting your home from leaks and weather in the same way a regular roof does. As a GAF Energy product, Timberline Solar™ is simply just a roof – with power added.
What is “Warranted Output” vs. “Warranted Power Generation”?
“Output” refers to the maximum potential power of a given energy shingle. Output is measured in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). “Generation” refers to the electricity produced over time by the entire photovoltaic (PV) system. Generation for a PV system is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). Actual generation of an energy shingle system may be lower and vary based on site and weather conditions.
GAF Energy’s base warranty (included in every project) covers the energy shingle’s output, or rated capacity to produce. Homeowners may purchase an enhanced warranty that can cover the system’s generation, which is based on the expected production of the system over time.
Think of it like a car’s fuel efficiency. A car with a 20-gallon gas tank and a fuel efficiency rating of 20 miles per gallon has the potential to drive 400 miles in perfect conditions before the fuel runs out. Therefore, the car’s maximum mileage starting on a full tank of gas is 400 miles. The actual mileage with a full 20 gallons of gas, however, is subject to various, often less-than-perfect driving conditions (like rough terrain, stopping and starting due to traffic, weather), and therefore is typically shorter than 400 miles. The difference between potential power output and generation in a PV system is similar to the difference between fuel efficiency and overall mileage of a car. In both cases, external conditions can impact the actual result.
What is maintenance on my solar roof?
Timberline Solar is warrantied for diverse weather conditions such as snow, rain, and wind, and the system is designed to require little to no maintenance. Seasonal rains should help keep the solar shingles clean of dirt and debris, but if not, homeowners can either gently rinse their shingles (only when they’re cool). Timberline Solar provides excellent, durable protection from the elements while generating reliable clean energy for the home. It’s a roof, with power added, designed to protect your home from leaks and other weather-related issues. Timberline Solar customers can monitor output and track their clean energy production by logging in to the GAF Energy homeowner portal. Solar roof monitoring puts data directly in customers’ hands and makes it easier to readily detect any issues.
What tax credits are compatible with GAF Energy Solar Roofs?
We encourage roofers and homeowners to consult their tax advisors on all available solar tax incentives.
Does my Solar Roof come with batteries or grid connection?
Timberline Solar is designed to be operated in connection with the electric grid, and is compatible with many energy storage offerings on the market. AC-coupled batteries are designed to be added to existing solar installations at any time. Other energy storage systems may require unique equipment for existing solar installations. All options and features for energy storage are site dependent and unique to the particular energy storage system. Please verify with a licensed energy storage contractor in advance that the specifications are right for the installed solar components and the desired operation modes (backup, self-consumption, time-of-use load shifting, etc.).
Are solar shingles as efficient as panels?
Due to the unique design of Timberline Solar as a complete roofing system, efficiency cannot be calculated in the same way as a traditional solar panel. The ES is made out of the same high-efficiency mono PERC cell technology found in Tier 1 solar panels, and depending on a home’s specific roof geometry, Timberline Solar may fit more kW per roof than traditional solar panels.
What are the benefits of solar shingles compared to rack mount solar panels?
Timberline Solar is the first true solar roof on the market. It incorporates the world’s first nailable solar shingle, which roofers can install as easily as regular roofing shingles, with only a nail gun. The benefit of this roof-integrated solar system is its seamless, waterproof installation that mimics traditional shingle installation.
With most residential solar systems on the market using rack mounted panels or tiles, these setups require specialized installation skills and they can puncture your existing roof with lag bolts. This could disrupt the waterproofing to your roof, possibly degrading your roof quicker. Plus, the smaller form factor of the Timberline Solar Energy Shingle as compared to a solar panel allows for installation on more complex roof shapes such as dormers or hipped roofs.
How much does a solar roof cost?
Pricing of Timberline Solar for the average home varies based on a number of factors, including the size and slope of the roof, the shading around the home, and how much sunlight reaches the roof throughout a typical day. A Timberline Solar roof is designed to be affordable and is typically comparable to a new roof plus traditional rack-mounted solar. Timberline Solar is currently available for residential installation, and may be available for commercial buildings in the future.
Why are GAF Energy Solar Roofs my best option for solar?
Timberline Solar, integrated solar roofing from GAF Energy, is the first true solar roof. It incorporates solar technology into traditional roofing materials and processes, and uses the world’s first nailable solar shingle, which lays flush against the roof deck, providing durability and protection that look great. With constant utility rate inflation, Timberline Solar was designed to be an affordable solar roofing option. If you’re using solar to power your home in lieu of electricity from the grid, your energy prices may be lower. This all means that your Timberline Solar roof could save you money, allowing those savings to offset the cost of your new roof over time. And with solar roofing becoming more popular, it could even benefit your home resale value.
Can Timberline Solar™ be installed around other objects on my roof, such as vents, chimneys, and skylights?
Installing Timberline Solar™ on a roof that has obstructions like vents, chimneys, skylights, and satellite dishes may be possible. It all comes down to how much the obstructions would interfere with installation, and whether moving or eliminating the obstructions is possible and desirable.
Timberline Solar™ cannot be installed over existing obstructions, but it can be installed near them, within a certain proximity. Other options include removing the obstructions or relocating them on the roof, depending on the type of obstruction and the homeowner’s preference. What makes Timberline Solar™ Energy Shingles (ES) uniquely appealing is their size and installation method. Unlike some solar products, which may be made up of large rigid panels with limitations in array options, Timberline Solar™ was designed to be smaller and capable of fitting individual shingles into areas on a roof that larger panels may not fit.
How does shading around my home affect a solar roofing installation?
Solar power functions by capturing sunlight and converting it into energy. Therefore, if a solar power module is blocked from sunlight, it cannot function properly. That’s why many solar roofing systems – such as Timberline Solar™ – require optimal exposure to sunlight.
If a roof is heavily shaded by a permanent obstruction like a building or thick forestation, and sunlight is blocked regardless of the position of the sun, a solar installation is not advised. This is known as “hard” or “extreme” shading. If a roof experiences light shading, mitigation efforts may be taken to allow for solar installation, depending on the severity of the shading. Examples of light shading include a single tree whose shadow moves depending on the sun’s position (known as “sweeping shade”) or whose canopy is thin enough for sunlight to perforate. Maximum energy generation cannot be achieved unless no shading is present, but the value of installing solar roofing even in the presence of shade can change from project to project, and from house to house.
How much does Timberline Solar™ stick out on a roof?
A Timberline Solar™ roof has two shingle types that are installed together to create a complete solar roof. The Timberline Solar Energy Shingle™ (ES) and the Timberline Solar HDZ™ Shingle.
The Timberline Solar Energy Shingle™ (ES) is the world’s first nailable solar energy shingle. It installs as readily and easily as standard roofing shingles, providing protection from the elements while generating solar energy for use within the home. It boasts an industry-defying depth of less than a quarter inch. The ES integrates with compatible traditional non-energy generating shingles (Timberline Solar HDZ™ Shingle) to create a sleek and attractive look.
This approach means homeowners do not sacrifice the integrity or aesthetics of the roof to go solar.
Is Timberline Solar™ the same as a Tesla solar roof?
No, Timberline Solar™ is a roof system that directly integrates solar technology into traditional lighter-weight roofing materials and processes. This new system incorporates something new: a nailable solar shingle, that we call the Timberline Solar Energy Shingle™ (ES). The ES is assembled domestically at GAF Energy’s manufacturing and R&D facility in San Jose, California.
What is Timberline Solar™?
Timberline Solar™ is the only roof system to directly integrate solar technology into traditional roofing processes and materials. It’s not just solar placed on top of a roof, it is an integrated roofing system that produces energy and keeps your home protected from the elements.
This new system incorporates the world’s first nailable solar shingle, the Timberline Solar Energy Shingle™ (ES), which is assembled domestically at GAF Energy’s manufacturing and R&D facility in San Jose, California. This creates American jobs and delivers a revolutionary product with the potential to drive a significant shift in residential clean energy adoption.
Can I add batteries to my existing GAF Energy solar system?
Yes. GAF Energy solar roof systems are compatible with many energy storage offerings on the market. A licensed energy storage contractor can evaluate, recommend, and install an appropriate energy storage system for your home.
AC-coupled batteries like the Tesla Powerwall or Sonnen Eco are designed to be added to existing solar installations at any time. Other energy storage systems may require unique equipment for existing solar installations.
All options and features for energy storage are site dependent and unique to the particular energy storage system. Please verify with a licensed energy storage contractor in advance that the specifications are right for the installed solar components and the desired operation modes (backup, self-consumption, time-of-use load shifting, etc.).

After installation, an electrician partnered with your roofer will connect your system. From there all you need to do is wait for your solar net metering permits to be issued. Then, activate your system and you could start saving money on your electrical bill.
How does solar connect or integrate to a roof?
The GAF Energy solar system is a direct-to-deck installation. The benefit of our roof-integrated solar system is its seamless, waterproof installation. With most residential solar systems on the market using rack mounted panels, these rack setups require puncturing your shingles and roof to install the lag bolts that hold the rack onto the roof. This could disrupt the seamless waterproofing to your roof, possibly degrading your roof quicker.
At GAF Energy we understand that peace of mind comes from having a roof that protects. Working with us means working with the best in the business for an elegant, waterproof solar roof. We designed our solar system to ensure protection and peace of mind.

Our team will be there with you every step of the way. Let the best in the business take care of keeping your home safe and dry while producing power for decades to come. You just need to sit back and watch your system generate electricity for your home.
Can I get a solar storage battery?
Battery storage allows homeowners to store some of the solar energy they’re producing in a backup battery, which can then be used as a limited power source at night or during power outages. We don’t offer a battery storage, but your GAF Energy solar system is compatible with many battery options on the market. If you are interested in purchasing a backup battery for your solar system, speak with a licensed energy storage contractor to have it installed.
It’s important to note that even with a battery, your solar system is still connected to the utility grid. When you produce more energy than you use, you’ll benefit from net metering which credits you for any excess energy you produce and send to the grid.
Complete solar system for your home
When you choose a GAF Energy roof-integrated complete home solar system, you are choosing more than just clean, renewable energy for your home. You’re choosing a waterproof solar roof solution that will help pay for itself over time by saving you money on your electric bill.
Can I go off-grid?
For the vast majority of people, it would not be cost-effective to try to go completely off-grid with a solar system. Unless you’re living in a remote area where electricity is unavailable, unreliable or extremely expensive, you’re better off being connected to the conventional utility grid. That’s because you’ll need to access energy from the grid when the sun isn’t shining. But thanks to net metering, any excess energy your system produces on sunny days will earn you credits that can be applied anytime you’re using grid power.
However, if you want backup power for limited uses, the GAF Energy system can be connected to a solar storage battery. You’ll need to purchase the battery and any other required components separately and will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of your solar storage battery.
An alternative to off-grid solar systems
Designed to be an easy to install product for GAF-certified roofers, your new solar system will have a sleek, low profile and be integrated into your roof’s waterproofing barrier. From consultation to installation and electrical hookup, we and our contractors will be there to make sure your solar roof is done right.
Once installed, your solar investment will help you save money for decades to come. Watch your system create clean energy right from your smartphone solar energy monitoring app. Let’s make solar energy from every roof possible with your new solar roof installation today.
Does my system work when the power goes out?
No. In order to keep you and your local power technicians safe, your solar system will also automatically shut down during a power outage. After the outage is over, your system will turn back on. If you want to have a backup power source during a power outage, your GAF Energy system is compatible with many battery options on the market. You can purchase a solar battery from a licensed energy storage contractor of your choice and have it installed.
Net metering allows you to have the benefit of renewable energy from your roof along with the security of the grid. Maintaining battery systems can be an added chore and prevent some people from going solar. With GAF Energy’s system, your maintenance only includes hosing off dusty panels or sweeping off snow. With nothing else to worry about you can watch your power generation from the comfort of your smart phone app all year long.
Power outages with solar power systems
Your grid-tied solar system will automatically shut off for safety during a power outage. This ensures that anyone working on your local power lines is protected from any harm. Once the outage is over, your system will be ready to operate.
Although GAF Energy does not sell solar storage batteries, your system is compatible with many battery options on the market.

An elegant, waterproof roof that could pay for itself over time is an investment worth making. With an industry-leading warranty and installed by the best in the business, a solar roof couldn’t be more attractive. Contact us today to see if a new roof with solar is right for you.
How to maintain a solar roof?
The GAF Energy solar system is designed to require little to no maintenance. Seasonal rains should help keep the solar panels clean of dirt and debris, but if not, homeowners can either gently rinse their panels (only when they’re cool) or opt to occasionally pay for a professional cleaning service. aside from the occasional, optional washing of the solar panels.
Our mission at GAF Energy is to make energy from every new roof possible, which means making going solar easy. Our product is easy to install by GAF-certified roofers, easy to maintain and backed by an industry-leading warranty for peace of mind.
You can’t go wrong investing in a low-maintenance, GAF Energy solar system with your new roof. Sleek, waterproof and easy to care for, our direct-to-deck system was designed and built with you and your roof in mind. The GAF Energy solar system could save you money for decades to come without any hassles.
How to care for your new solar roof
Solar panels need to be clean to make the most amount of power, so that means keeping them free of dust or other debris. Since they’re made of glass, snow usually melts off once the sun comes out, but if not you may want to brush it off with a soft-bristled extended brush.
If the panels get dusty and the rain doesn’t clean them off, you can spray them with a hose (only when they’re cool) or hire a local cleaning service. This will help you maximize your electric bill savings.
Your solar panels can generate energy anytime the sun is shining all year round. If you notice any decrease in energy production while checking your smartphone monitoring app, it might mean they just need a cleaning.
Can I save money by going solar?
Yes. Your roof is potentially valuable real estate for installing a home solar system. Going solar with GAF Energy means you’ll likely use less energy from the grid, resulting in a lower electric bill.
With GAF Energy you get a new solar roof that will keep your home dry and safe while producing power that could save you money for decades to come. Our goal, to create energy from every new roof, inspired us to design an easy -to-install product that will ensure the process of getting a new solar roof goes smoothly.
If you need a new roof, why not add solar at the same time? Our direct-to-deck solar roofing system means that you get a low profile seamless waterproof product that will help pay for itself over time.
How you can save money with a solar roof installation
Your new solar system uses an inverter that converts the DC energy your solar panels make into AC energy for your home. If you’re using solar to power your home and not electricity from the grid, this lowers your electric bill.
And, since you’ll sometimes produce more energy than you need, such as during the summer, that excess energy is then delivered to the grid. Depending upon your local net metering policies, your local utility will credit you for any excess electricity that goes to the grid. This will also help reduce your monthly electric bill.
This all means that your new solar system could save you money, allowing it to pay for itself over time.
Being grid-connected provides you with the security of a consistent power source while potentially lowering your expenses. Installed by the top roofing company and backed by an industry-leading warranty for your roof, panels and electronics, this is an investment that makes sense. Become more energy independent by installing a GAF Energy solar roof.
What happens to my power bill with a solar roof?
You’ll still receive a monthly statement from your utility. Depending upon the size of your solar system, your family’s energy usage, how much solar energy you generate monthly and local net metering rules, that bill could show a credit or a small amount due.
Our solar and roofing pros will help you decide whether going solar makes economic sense for you.
Are solar panels worth the investment?
With a net-metering agreement, surplus energy generated by your solar system is fed back into the power grid. A surplus results when you generate more solar energy than you use within a given timeframe (i.e. your monthly billing cycle).
The value of this energy, governed by your local net metering policies, is typically treated as a credit to your bill, and can be managed in several ways. Depending on the state, the value may roll over month-to-month. In other areas, that amount may be credited quarterly or annually.
If you’re wondering if installing solar is worth it, contact us today. A GAF Energy consultant can work with you to help you understand your local utility net metering rules and regulations. Let us make going solar easy for you so you can start saving money now.
Will I sell power back to my utility and make money?
Not exactly. While your roof-integrated solar system may generate excess energy sent to the grid under net metering rules, you are compensated for this via a credit, not a cash payment. This is how your new solar roof could save you money and pay for itself over time.
You also may use these credits when you need to draw energy from the grid, such as at night or during times of year you’re generating less solar energy.
Depending on your local net metering rules, these credits may roll over monthly or get distributed quarterly or annually.
When you factor in the benefits of net metering with government incentives that help pay for solar, you could definitely end up saving money over the coming decades.
Save money by installing solar with a new roof
Solar panels can generate energy any time of year, as long as the sun is shining to help save you money. When you generate more energy than you use during the summer, you’ll receive net metering credits to use during the winter, to help keep your electric bills lower all year long.
Homeowners with solar enjoy checking their smartphone app to see how much energy they’re making on their roof.
The panels don’t have any moving parts, so the only required maintenance is keeping them clean so they can produce plenty of energy and save you money.
If you’re in need of a new roof, give us a call today to see if a solar roof is right for your home. Why worry about managing two home improvement projects at the same time? Get solar with a new GAF roof.

How do I know when I need to replace my roof?
As with all things, a roof eventually needs to be replaced to maintain its integrity. As your home’s barrier against the elements, your roof takes on a lot of damage over its lifetime. Typically, roofs are replaced around the 20-year mark, with some needing to be replaced sooner and others lasting longer. This depends on many factors, such as the roof composition and what kind of climate you live in.
Contact a GAF-certified roofer if you’d like to schedule a roof inspection to see if your roof needs to be replaced. If you do need a roof replacement, that’s the best time to consider going solar with GAF Energy. Our seamless, waterproof solar system could even help pay for itself over time.
When to replace your roof
To inspect your roof yourself, take a look in your attic on a sunny day. If you notice light getting through anywhere or if you see sagging, cracks or evidence of water damage, such as dark spots, you might need a roof replacement. A damaged roof could lead to moisture getting inside your home, which can cause an array of expensive problems if not dealt with promptly.
By working with a GAF-certified roofer, you are choosing the best in the business, backed by an industry-leading warranty. Your new solar system was designed by waterproofing and roofing professionals to bring you a top-of-the-line product that lasts. Get in touch today to find out if a solar roof is right for your home.

Is solar roofing really good for the environment? Does it really make a difference?
Yes! By replacing some of your daily energy use with clean renewable energy from your roof you are lowering your carbon footprint and reducing your dependency on gas and oil. Through net metering agreements, surplus energy produced by your solar system is delivered to the electrical grid, helping to offset others’ use of conventional grid power.
Going solar can help lead to cleaner air. Reducing our carbon footprint is a way to fight global warming and it helps reduce the need for extraction practices such as oil drilling and fracking. This leaves the environment cleaner while still providing power to your home. You can help contribute to a sustainable, healthier environment by working with GAF Energy to install a roof-integrated solar panel system with your new roof this year.

Do solar panels work in the snow?
In short, it depends. There are various factors that impact if and how solar panels work in the snow. If your panels get completely covered in snow, they will not work. If your roof has a high enough pitch, it will usually shed snow better than people with low roof pitches.
Do solar panels work in snowy weather?
Solar panels need sunlight to produce energy, so if it’s cloudy or snowing, your solar system will produce less energy. But as soon as the sun comes out and the snow melts off, they’ll be back to making energy.
